How much should water heater installation cost? Home Water Heaters Angie's List Project Cost Info)Lower Merion, PA - right outside of Philadelphia. Well, the first water heater I bought from a local heating and air conditioning firm (and plumber) was $1. This was for a 7. Bradford White. The day after it was installed, I called the local vendor who sold it to me and installed it and said I was running out of hot water in about 1. It was only then I found out the WARRENTEE from Bradford White was worthless, and so was any guarantee from the installing plumber. I wrote the following letters to document what happened when I thought this would be going to court.
The time I wasted on this, plus the two months of cold showers me and my family endured, and the BS we got from both the Heating and Air Conditioner contracter who sold and installed the unit and from Bradford White were an injustice to paying top dollar to what I thought was a reliable vendor and manufacturer. I also found out how far Bradford White would go to invalidate any supposed warrantee that came with their water heater. The second water heater I bought was $1,5. A O Smith. It's been working fine and we get 3 or 4 showers with plenty of hot water to spare — no problem. Here are the letters. I have left out the name of the installing sales and supplying HVAC contractor because when they didn't cash my check after 6 weeks, and I finally stopped payment on it (first time I stopped payment on a check in 3. This is the ONLY reason I don't show their name. I can only surmise he sold me "gray goods" and/or knew there was a problem with the unit. I hope you didn't get this water heater installed in your home after me.. Here are the letters: G’day, XXXXXX…This is to confirm what you already know, but I wanted to demonstrate a course of timed events in this formal correspondence. In the beginning of this year I purchased a 7. Bradford White water heater from you for $1,7. On Monday, January 7th your technicians delivered and installed it in my home. Then very next day when I showered I found I continually had to turn down the cold water to maintain a constant temperature. My showers range from 1. It is in the same shower I have used in my house for the past 3. ![]() ![]() More tips, tricks, and tools for installing wood look tile flooring. Best patterns, floor flatness, grout joint size, & tile leveling systems for large tile. I called and alerted you to this on Tuesday the 8th, and you sent a technician to resolve this. Your technician called technical support at Bradford White who gave him a few tasks to perform to figure out the problem. Among the first was supposed to be a definite test to see if the problem was the water heater: turn the shower on hot and wait, then feel the hot water pipe exiting the water heater. Initially it was hot, after ten minutes is was tepid, proving the problem was in the hot water heater unit. A dip tube was ordered and a few days later installed. Thank you for this prompt service. The problem continued, I called you and your technician came back. During this visit a temperature test of the shower flow showed after 3 minutes the water temperature dropped 1. After ten minutes the water temperature dropped 4. Bradford White on the phone then pointed in every conceivable other direction than a problem with the water heater itself. During the next visits additional tests were performed. Tech support at Bradford White suggested the shower was using too much water and your technician measured the water flow from the tub (6 gallons/minute) and from the shower head (5 gallons/minute). I assured your technician that it was the same shower I have been using. I also assured him I don’t turn on the hot water full on and take a shower, but mix the hot water 5. Their theory also doesn’t account for the recovery rate of hot water being made while the shower is running. Let’s face it: the problem lies elsewhere. Tech support at Bradford White continued to query everything else but the water heater, looking for - searching for any other reasons a 7. If this water heater won’t perform for the reason I purchased it - plenty of hot water for showers for a house of 5 people (like the last one I purchased from you) I’d like it repaired. If it can’t be repaired - which is what I’m seeing, I’d like it replaced. I definitely don’t want to be faced with only one person can take a shower without running out - or low - of hot water. Right now three people live here and the situation isn’t good: one person gets hot water, one gets warm water, and one person gets a cold shower. And, XXXXXXX, I don’t want to worry about it in 6 months: two of my three kids are in college, they return for a month at winter break, a week at spring break and are home for 4 months in the summer. I purchased a larger 7. We all get up early for our jobs, and showers are taken in succession. I’m not a water heater technician, and I have no idea why this is such a poorly performing unit. It’s also not my responsibility to trouble shoot. I did my part, paid for the unit and the install. That was the hard part - paying one thousand seven hundred ninety five dollars. And the unit doesn’t work. It was DOA. The ball is in your court. It’s been over a month, and I’d now like a resolution. Thank you. Letter Two: Dear Mr. XXXXX,This is to confirm the synopsis of our conversation of my phone call to you on Tuesday, Feb 2. It has been almost two months after the installation of the 7. I purchased from you, and you installed in my home on January 6th. It’s been almost two months since we have been able to take a hot shower without turning the cold water faucet down repeatedly so the shower water remains hot. Only one person in the house is able to take a hot shower, and this shower lasting only ten to twenty minutes until the hot water runs out. The other two people living in this house take either a warm shower or cold shower. Despite repeated calls to your firm, and outside of your technician making a single trip to replace the “dip tube” on the water heater, you have not made any effort to fix this condition. You have, however, sent numerous people out to “measure the temperature” of the water, inspect the plumbing to see if they could find any possible other place in the house to blame for the hot water not working correctly, including looking at each faucet and water valve connection for a safety crossover valve (there are none) to see if cold water was returning to the tank from another direction (it isn’t). In addition, the Bradford- White plumber- assigned technician was dispatched to my home, not to repair or replace the water heater, but to measure the flow, and take water and time temperature readings from the shower head I have been using for the past 4. His findings showed a 2. I assure you my own findings are quite different: I can’t take a single shower for 1. I turn the water on at about 1/3 flow. This condition is unsatisfactory on a brand new, one thousand, seven hundred ninety five dollar 7. You made 2 recommendations to resolve this problem: 1. To wait for the unusual and severe cold weather to subside so the water from outside entering the tank was not so cold. And. 2. to get a smaller, lower volume shower head. When I said I wasn’t willing to do either of these, you said I was “Not willing to work with you.” I informed you the resolution I now wanted would be replacement of the hot water heater that was not working since day one of its installation with a new unit from a different vendor (as I have already seen first hand the incredible hassle of the non- existent warranty from Bradford White). I advised you I had on Monday, Feb. I gave you until the issue was resolved. You called this “Theft of services.” I mentioned I was more than willing to issue another check upon a resolution of this problem. This is the first time I have stopped payment on any check in over 3. In finality, you said you would talk to some “plumber friends of yours…” which didn’t sound like this faulty unit was to be replaced - only to look for more reasons it was fine. As an aside, this is to let you know how dissatisfied I am with your not- so- professional services. While I paid list price for this unit because of a promise of a good product with a solid warranty from both you and your vendor, no warranty was provided at all. Instead, you pointed in every possible conceivable other direction in order not to replace the unit that was delivered DOA - not working on arrival. To add insult to injury, you had the gall to tell me I have to wait for warm weather to take a hot shower. Why Bringing Back a Wooly Mammoth Is No Longer Science Fiction. Dr. George Church is a real- life Dr. Frankenstein. The inventor of CRISPR and one of the minds behind the Human Genome Project is no longer content just reading and editing DNA—now he wants to make new life. In Ben Mezrich’s latest book, Wooly: The True Story of the Quest to Revive One of History’s Most Iconic Extinct Creatures, Church and his Harvard lab try to do the impossible, and clone an extinct Woolly mammoth back into existence. Mezrich, author of the books that would become the feature films 2. The Social Network, seems to have graduated from college to a bioengineering Ph. D with his latest work, which is chock- full of scientific explanation detailing every aspect of the Church lab’s efforts to rewrite the DNA of an elephant to look like a wooly mammoth. But Mezrich is even more interested in telling the stories of the people trying to make the mammoth a reality, dramatizing the lives of Church, his wife, Harvard Professor Dr. Ting Wu, their fellow scientists, researchers working for a competing cloning lab in Korea, and the conservationists at the Siberian preserve where the mammoths will finally reside. While at times his predictions feel too good to be true, Mezrich’s prose rarely fails to engage. Gizmodo sat down with Mezrich to talk about a few of the themes present in his book, as well as the future of de- extinction and scientific breakthroughs in general. Below is a lightly edited and condensed version of the interview. Gizmodo: What brought you to extinct species revival in particular? Mezrich: I’ve been interested in mammoths since I was a kid, basically, and I’ve always been a fan of Michael Crichton and Jurassic Park, so it’s always been on my mind to tell a story like that. Then a couple years ago, I started hearing about Dr. George Church and the Mammoth Revival project, and I decided I just needed to tell this story. So I basically reached out to him blindly. He let me embed myself in his lab, so I spent a while just living there seeing what was going on, and just getting really into it. Gizmodo: An early chapter of the book opens four years in the future, when humans have succeeded in bringing mammoths back to life. What makes you think the project will succeed so soon? Mezrich: Even at this moment, right now, there are three prehistoric woolly mammoth [genomes] alive, living in elephant cells, so we’re on the verge of it. I was talking to George [the previous night]. Even though he doesn’t put a date on it, I put the four year date, but he sees that as totally possible. The slowest part of the process right now is the gestation period of an elephant. Whether we’ll have a woolly mammoth in three years or just be very close in three years, I don’t know, but a lot depends on the money and on the elephant. The initiative is how they work on it, but it is feasible. Gizmodo: Let’s talk about the money. That’s a huge motivating factor behind the project, but it seems like the wealthy are the ones funding scientific efforts a lot of the time (Editor’s Note: The Church Lab’s Genome Sequencing project is funded mainly by private computing and biotechnology companies). Is this a good thing? How do you feel about science funded on the whims of oligarchs? Mezrich: Well it’s interesting, you look at this marriage between incredibly wealthy people and science, and in some ways it’s a very good thing. You know, in some ways it pushes science forward. You’re not gonna see (and I wish you would) Donald Trump pouring money into the woolly mammoth revival project, you’re not seeing the government doing these things. Scientists] do often have to turn to outside sources, and if someone like Peter Thiel wants to live forever, he needs to fund the things in George Church’s lab. So whatever his personal goal, it’s good for everybody. I look at it as a positive thing, I think big money has always influenced outside- the- box science, look at what Elon Musk does or what’s going on at Amazon, Facebook or Google. It’s very very wealthy people throwing money at crazy ideas, and hopefully we all benefit from it. Peter Thiel put in $1. Gizmodo: This book and The Accidental Billionaires both had the protagonists receive additional funding from Peter Thiel. How do you feel about his involvement in particular in such immediately relevant work? Mezrich: Yeah, I’ve written about him twice. Editor’s Note: Mezrich also covered Peter Thiel in his book Accidental Billionaires) In this case the way George tells the story, he basically ran into Peter Thiel, and told him about a couple of projects. Thiel said tell me your craziest projects, and he listed a couple of them, and [Thiel] said, ‘the woolly mammoth, that’s the one I want to do.’Gizmodo: Speaking of other projects, is Church working on anything half as crazy as a mammoth? Mezrich: Yeah, absolutely, Church and his lab [are] doing the anti- malaria mosquitos, working with the Gates foundation, they’re building domes over villages in Africa and releasing mosquitoes that can’t carry malaria, to test them out. Also, his student Ken Esfeld at MIT is working on transgenic mice to beat lyme disease. The goal is to release 1. Lyme disease onto the island of Nantucket, which is kind of a wild story. In his lab, they’re also working on the pigs with human- compatible livers. They’ve a couple of pig embryos with livers that can be used in humans. You’re looking at the future of transplantation, which is incredible. They’re working on projects to extend lifespans… but the mammoth project and the ones with the transgenic species are the craziest. Gizmodo: Do you think meddling with ecosystems and reviving lost species could have negative effects on living ones? Mezrich: You have to be very ethical and responsible because you’re working with technology that is very powerful. The same technology that allows you to create a woolly mammoth or an extinct species allows you to eliminate a species if you want. You could eliminate mosquitos (Editor’s Note: Scientists are discussing the possibility of doing this with a controversial and speculative technology called gene drive), but that brings up enormous issues in ecology. I think bringing back an extinct species like the mammoth is generally a good thing, I think that the people who don’t want Church to do that are usually thinking what does it mean for the Asian elephant population, which is endangered. But it’s not a zero sum game—we’re not giving up on these endangered species . We now have the technology to bring back a species we mostly ate out of existence. It’s like a karmic righting of a wrong, and there’s been a lot of talk about the sixth extinction, species are going extinct all over the place, but the fact that we can bring one back is a huge moment, I think, in human history and our ability fix the things we were breaking. We have to live with our environment, but we also have to figure out ways to make it better, and if bringing back a woolly mammoth to help the environment is something we can do, it’s something we should do. We have to live with our environment, but we also have to figure out ways to make it better, and if bringing back a woolly mammoth to help the environment is something we can do, it’s something we should do. Gizmodo: Church isn’t the only one working to clone a mammoth. There’s also Hwang Woo- suk’s Korean dog- cloning lab, Soaam Technologies. Can you talk about how you got involved with them? Mezrich: This is a wild story—this is the story of a disgraced scientist. He was the one who claimed to clone human cells, but it turns out he had been forcing his students to donate their eggs, and secondly that his clone cells are fraudulent, so he’s trying to resurrect his reputation by being the first to clone a mammoth. So, he has supposedly got incredibly preserved frozen mammoths out of the ice [in the Arctic] in conjunction with some Russians, and is going to use those cells to clone [the mammoth]. Church doesn’t believe that is something that’s going to work. Those materials have been in the ice too long and bombarded by radiation, there’s no reason that DNA should be clonable anymore. They’ve bought up tracts of land in Alberta, Canada, and the people think they want to build their own Jurassic Park up there.. It’s a very strange company, and it sounds to me what they’re chasing is impossible, but Church says nothing is impossible, so who knows?

Thermal mass | Your. Home. Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb and store heat energy. ![]()
Under the Boards: Archaeological Site Formation Processes at the Commissariat Store, Brisbane. A lot of heat energy is required to change the temperature of high density materials like concrete, bricks and tiles. They are therefore said to have high thermal mass. Lightweight materials such as timber have low thermal mass. Appropriate use of thermal mass throughout your home can make a big difference to comfort and heating and cooling bills. Photo: Sunpower Design. Thermal mass can store solar energy during the day and re- radiate it at night. Thermal mass, correctly used, moderates internal temperatures by averaging out diurnal (day−night) extremes. This increases comfort and reduces energy costs. Poor use of thermal mass can exacerbate the worst extremes of the climate and can be a huge energy and comfort liability. It can radiate heat to you all night as you attempt to sleep during a summer heatwave or absorb all the heat you produce on a winter night. To be effective, thermal mass must be integrated with sound passive design techniques. This means having appropriate areas of glazing facing appropriate directions with appropriate levels of shading, ventilation, insulation and thermal mass. How thermal mass works. Thermal mass acts as a thermal battery. During summer it absorbs heat during the day and releases it by night to cooling breezes or clear night skies, keeping the house comfortable. In winter the same thermal mass can store the heat from the sun or heaters to release it at night, helping the home stay warm. Thermal mass is not a substitute for insulation. Thermal mass stores and re- releases heat; insulation stops heat flowing into or out of the building. A high thermal mass material is not generally a good thermal insulator (see Rammed earth). Thermal mass is particularly beneficial where there is a big difference between day and night outdoor temperatures. Daily temperature fluctuations for different construction methods. Correct use of thermal mass can delay heat flow through the building envelope by as much as 1. Wilson 1. 99. 8). Thermal lag’ below)A high mass building needs to gain or lose a large amount of energy to change its internal temperature, whereas a lightweight building requires only a small energy gain or loss to change the air temperature. This is an important factor to consider when choosing construction systems and assessing climate change adaptation. Winter. Allow thermal mass to absorb heat during the day from direct sunlight or from radiant heaters. It re- radiates this warmth back into the home throughout the night. Summer. Allow cool night breezes and/or convection currents to pass over the thermal mass, drawing out all the stored energy. During the day protect the thermal mass from excess summer sun with shading and insulation if required. Using thermal mass effectively. Thermal mass is most appropriate in climates with a large diurnal temperature range. As a rule of thumb, diurnal ranges of less than 6°C are insufficient; 7°−1. C can be useful depending on climate; where they exceed 1. C, high thermal mass construction is desirable. Exceptions to the rule occur in more extreme climates. In cool or cold climates where supplementary heating is often used, houses benefit from high mass construction regardless of diurnal range (e. Hobart 8. 5°C). In tropical climates with diurnal ranges of 7°−8°C (e. Cairns 8. 2°C) high mass construction can cause thermal discomfort unless carefully designed, well shaded and insulated. Always use thermal mass in conjunction with sound climate- appropriate passive design. Glass to mass ratios for different climates. Glass to mass ratios compare the area of solar exposed, passively shaded, north- facing glazing to the area of exposed, insulated internal mass (walls and floor), to avoid overheating passive solar houses. The graph below shows recommended glass to mass ratios for Australian capital cities. Source: Baggs & Mortenson 2. Glass to mass ratios in Australian cities. Rule- of- thumb glass to mass ratios for different climates. Cold and alpine climates: double glazed areas of 2. Cool temperate: double glazed windows with drapes and pelmets 1. Temperate climates: glass area 1. Cooling dominated climates: the ratio of solar exposed north- facing glass should be at least 6% but up to 1. Cooling only climates: solar exposed glass should be avoided; low mass construction with high level ventilation is usually best. Earth coupled slabs can add useful ‘heat wicking’ properties to thermal mass where mass covered ground temperatures at 1. C in summer, i. e. Darwin! (for ground temperature map see Baggs et al. These ratios should be varied according to: solar availability (access and incidence)diurnal temperature rangestype and orientation of glazing and shading (ambient and diffuse gains). NOTE: These rules apply only to predominantly north glazed passive designs with guaranteed solar access. Modelling with energy rating software is the only reliable way to validate them. Typical applications. In rooms with good access to winter sun it is useful to connect the thermal mass to the earth. The most common example is slab- on- ground construction. Less common examples are brick or earthen floors, earth- covered housing or green roofs. Construction systems)A slab- on- ground is preferable to a suspended slab in most climates because it has greater thermal mass due to direct contact with the ground. This is known as earth coupling. Deeper, more stable ground temperatures rise beneath the house because its insulating properties prevent heat loss. The slab assumes this higher temperature which can range from 1. C. In summer, the earth has the capacity to ‘wick’ away substantial heat loads. It also provides a cool surface for occupants to radiate heat to (or conduct to, with bare feet). This increases both psychological and physiological comfort. In winter, the slab maintains thermal comfort at a much higher temperature with no heat input. The addition of passive solar or mechanical heating is then more effective due to the lower temperature increase required to achieve comfortable temperatures. Use surfaces such as quarry tiles or simply polish the concrete slab. Do not cover areas of the slab exposed to winter sun with carpet, cork, wood or other insulating materials: use rugs instead. The vertical edges of a slab- on- ground are required to be insulated in Zone 8 (cold climate) or when in- slab heating or cooling is installed within the slab (see Clause 3. Building Code of Australia (BCA), Volume Two, for more detail). Insulate slab edges in cold climates or where in- slab heating or cooling is installed within the slab. The whole slab must be insulated from earth contact in cold climates and regions with low earth temperatures at 3m depth (e. Tasmania) or hot, humid climates with high earth temperatures (e. Darwin). Consider termite proofing when designing slab edge insulation. Take care to ensure that the type of termite management system selected is compatible with the slab edge insulation. Masonry walls also provide good thermal mass. Recycled materials can be used (e. Avoid finishing masonry walls with plasterboard as this insulates the thermal mass from the interior and significantly reduces its capacity to absorb and re- release heat. Reverse brick veneer is an example of good thermal mass practice for external walls because the mass is on the inside and externally insulated. In traditional brick veneer, the mass of the brick makes no contribution to thermal storage because it is insulated from the inside and not the outside. Thermal mass floor and lightweight frame. Thermal mass walls and floor slab. Where to locate thermal mass. To determine the best location for thermal mass you need to know if your greatest energy consumption is the result of summer cooling or winter heating. Heating: Locate thermal mass in areas that receive direct sunlight or radiant heat from heaters. Heating and cooling: Locate thermal mass inside the building on the ground floor for ideal summer and winter efficiency. The floor is usually the most economical place to locate heavy materials, and earth coupling gives additional thermal stabilisation in both summer and winter in these climates. Locate thermal mass in north- facing rooms with good solar access, exposure to cooling night breezes in summer, and additional sources of heating or cooling (heaters or evaporative coolers). He left the railways and took up a job as a carter for a bakery. On 2. 5 June 1. 91. Ethel Tilly Morse, the daughter of Ernest Tilly and Mary (née Brogden) Morse, in Brisbane. The young couple set up house at 'Eroldvale', Princess Street, off Fairfield Road, close to the South Brisbane Cemetery. They welcomed their only child Alfred Ernest Ansell on 1 May 1. The three young men decided to enlist in the Army and attended the recruiting office together on 1. September 1. 91. 6. They were all marked down as 5th Reinforcements for the 4. Batallion AIF currently fighting in France and given consecutive Regimental Numbers: Oswald 2. Vernon 2. 70. 6 and Alfred 2. The men applied for 4 days leave from 2- 6 November - which was granted - so they could bid farewell to their parents. The young soldiers left for overseas aboard the transport ship HMAT A5. Kyarra on 1. 7th November 1. Plymouth 1. 0 weeks later. They all trained at Sutton Mandeville in Wiltshire with the 1. Training Brigade and left for France together on 2 July 1. As part of the 3rd Division AIF, the 4. Batallion was focussed on the Ypres sector of Belgium. The three soldiers had joined the 4. Messines on 7 June 1. Warneton battle on 3. July. They were allocated to "C" Company. At the start of October 1. Belgian town of Poperinglie. The weather was cold, but fine and clear, on the 1st October and the batallion prepared for a major operation to the east of Ypres. The Germans planes were bombing the 3rd Division but there was just the one casualty in the 4. The next day - 2nd October - the 4. ORs (other ranks) present for the battle. The batallion was entrained at Poperinglie and soon arrived at Ypres where they bivouaced to the east, near the cemetery. The 3rd October passed with little incident. The battle was about to take place the next morning - the 4th October 1. The 3rd October passed with little incident but the battle was about to take place on the morning of the 4th. At 5. 1. 6 am the batallion's artillery put down a fearsome barrage which moved forward until 6 am. It was met with an equally fearsome barrage from the Germans. At 6am, the attack on the German lines began. The 4. 2nd's barrage fell like a"wall of flames" on the appointed line (The Red Line). The rear troops sustained a fair number of casualties and to avoid more they moved forward up Hill 4. An enemy machine gun kept firing for 5 minutes. Unknown to Alfred, Vernon had just gone over the top and had been struck by one of their own shells that had fallen short. His leg was almost completely severed from his body and the stretcher bearers took him away to the Dressing Station. This was 6. 3. 0 am. At 6. 4. 1 am, the 4. Alfred Ansell was in a trench in Thames Wood - about 5. Zonnebeke going towards Passchendaele (see map below). He leapt from his trench and "went over the top". At that very moment a German shell landed in the trench and struck Ansell with full force. One soldier said "he was badly knocked about" but it is evident from other eye- witness accounts that Ansell was torn apart by the bomb. The 4. 2nd batallion took their objective (The Red Line) by 8am. One hundred German prisoners were taken and nine machine guns captured. However, the 4. 2nd batallion lost 3 officers killed, 2 officers died of wounds and 6 officers wounded. As for the "ORs", 2. Pte Alfred Ansell. Most of the casualties were in this Thames Wood area. That same afternoon his platoon mate, Pte James Sheridan (7. Gympie - buried what they could of Albert. He was buried where he fell and a rough cross was erected to mark his presence. Sheridan was helped by fellow soldier L/Cpl John Wilson Thomson (7. Scotland who had enlisted with the 4. Brisbane. Thomson was wounded in action the very next day. Sadly, Alfred's brother- in- law Vernon never survived. He is thought to have died of wounds in the Dressing Station that same day - 4 October 1. Ossie Morse survived the war and returned to Australia. The names of Alfred Erold Ansell and Vernon Eustace Morse are inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium. Sheridan visited Albert's widow Ethel in Brisbane after the war and told her the story. He said that he packaged up Albert's belongings and sent them to her - but they never arrived. On the anniversary of her husband's death in 1. Ethel inserted a notice into the Brisbane Courier: John Harrison Barrie was born in 1. Kangaroo Point (Brisbane) to Alexander and Isabella Barrie (née Harrison). He had an older brother Herbert Horace and a younger one Charles Henry. The boys attended East Brisbane State School and Maryborough SS. Herbert (4. 09. 0) and John (5. October 1. 91. 5 in Brisbane. Herbert was sent to England with the 2. Bn aboard the HMAT Commonwealth and John was sent to Egypt aboard HMAT Star of Victoria arriving in May 1. John eventually ended up in France and was wounded in the hip by enemy fire. He was taken to the XI Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul and was injured again when the CCS was bombed during a German air raid on 8 July 1. He suffered multiple wounds and died and was buried the same day. He was 2. 8 years old. His brother Herbert was killed in action at Villers Bretonneux on 1. July 1. 91. 8. Herbert is not listed in the Yeronga Memorial. It is not certain why as he had the same address for next- of- kin as John (their brother Charles Henry Barrie of Henson Road, Salisbury). Charles Edward Beaman was born in Sydenham, Kent, England in October 1. Charles and Emma Beaman (née Sinnott). He attended St Philip School in that town. Charles later took on a job as caterer for the military in South Africa in The Boer War. Charles married back in Kent and set up a greengrocer's shop with his wife Ellen (b. Kelvin Tce, Sydenham. The family of Charles, his wife Ellen and their two- year- old son Charles Brighton Beaman emigrated to Australia aboard the Osterley arriving in Brisbane on 2. November 1. 91. 2. He obtained work as a caterer and waiter. His wife Ellen died on 2. December 1. 91. 4. On 1. 1 August 1. Reg. No. 6. 03. 1). At the time he and his son Charles Brighton Beamen were living at Mabel Villa, Clara Sttreet (off Venner Road) Fairfield. He sent his son up to live with Florence Wells (his wife's sister) and her husband Percy at Crestbrook Station, Toogoolawah, Queensland. The 2. 5th Bn (1. Reinforcements) embarked Brisbane aboard HMAT Marathon and arrived in Plymouth on 9 January 1. After six months training in England, Charles was off to France where he joined the 2. Bn. During the Battle of Zonnebeke in Belgium Charles was killed in action on 4 October 1. My thanks to Julie Brown (nee Beaman) for the photo of her grandfather Charles Edward (above). She wrote: "Uncle Percy's daughter implied that rumour said there was five Beaman boys". William Charles Behan was born in Brisbane 1. Michael Behan and Anne Jane Behan (née Glancy). His father Michael was a butcher and manager of Graziers' Butchering Coy at Wooloongabba, Brisbane. William had many siblings: the oldest son was Thomas born in 1. Michael was born in 1. This is Part 2 of a four- part series on Elon Musk’s companies. For an explanation of why this series is happening and how Musk is involved, start with Part 1.____________PDF and ebook options: We made a fancy PDF of this post for printing and offline viewing (see a preview here), and an ebook containing the whole four- part Elon Musk series: ___________A Wait But Why post can be a few different things. One type of WBW post is the “let’s just take this whole topic and really actually get to the bottom of it so we can all completely get it from here forward.” The ideal topic for that kind of post is one that’s really important to our lives, and that tends to come up a lot, but that’s also hugely complex and confusing, often controversial with differing information coming out of different mouths, and that ends up leaving a lot of people feeling like they don’t totally get it as well as they “should.”The way I approach a post like that is I’ll start with the surface of the topic and ask myself what I don’t fully get—I look for those foggy spots in the story where when someone mentions it or it comes up in an article I’m reading, my mind kind of glazes over with a combination of “ugh it’s that icky term again nah go away” and “ew the adults are saying that adult thing again and I’m seven so I don’t actually understand what they’re talking about.” Then I’ll get reading about those foggy spots—but as I clear away fog from the surface, I often find more fog underneath. So then I research that new fog, and again, often come across other fog even further down. My perfectionism kicks in and I end up refusing to stop going down the rabbit hole until I hit the floor. For example, I kind of got the Iraq situation, but there was a lot of fog there too—so when I wrote a post about it, one fog- clearing rabbit hole took me all the way back to Muhammad in 5. AD. That was the floor. Digging into another part of the story brought me to the end of World War I. ![]() Another brought me to the founding of ISIS. Hitting the floor is a great feeling and makes me realize that the adults weren’t actually saying anything that complicated or icky after all. And when I come across that topic again, it’s fun now, because I get it and I can nod with a serious face on and be like, “Yes, interest rates are problematic” like a real person. I’ve heard people compare knowledge of a topic to a tree. ![]() If you don’t fully get it, it’s like a tree in your head with no trunk—and without a trunk, when you learn something new about the topic—a new branch or leaf of the tree—there’s nothing for it to hang onto, so it just falls away. By clearing out fog all the way to the bottom, I build a tree trunk in my head, and from then on, all new information can hold on, which makes that topic forever more interesting and productive to learn about. And what I usually find is that so many of the topics I’ve pegged as “boring” in my head are actually just foggy to me—like watching episode 1. So when it was time to start what I had labeled in my head as “the Tesla post,” I knew this was going to be one of those posts. To understand if and why Tesla Motors matters, you have to understand both the story of cars and the story of energy—two worlds I somehow am simultaneously confused by and tremendously sick of. Just hearing someone say “climate change” or “energy crisis” or “tailpipe emissions” makes me kind of gag at this point—just too much politics, too many annoying people, too much misinformation on all sides, and it’s just hard to know how much I actually care and if there can be a solution to all of it anyway. So I did what I do when my tortoise shits when I’m out of the apartment and then spends hours walking through it and tracking it across everything, including the walls somehow—I rolled up my sleeves, took a deep breath, whispered, “Be a man, Tim,” and started scraping through layers of shit. If I have to live in a world with people arguing constantly about energy and oil and greenhouse gases and incentive programs, I might as well build myself a proper tree trunk. After weeks of reading and asking questions and writing, I’ve emerged from the tortoise sewage with something that toes the line between a long blog post and a short book. I could have broken this into multiple posts, but it’s all one story and I wanted to keep it all together. It’ll be a bit of a time investment, but I think you’ll come out of it with a sturdier tree trunk about all of this than you have now. And as it turns out, when it comes to this topic, we may be witnessing a very awesome moment in history without quite realizing it yet. Two disclaimers before we start: 1) This is a highly politicized issue, but this post has no political agenda. I’m not political because nothing could ever possibly be more annoying than American politics. I think both parties have good points, both also have a bunch of dumb people saying dumb things, and I want nothing to do with it. So I approached this post—like I try to with every post—from a standpoint of rationality and what I think makes sense. Spoiler: The post is very pro- Tesla. Which might seem suspicious since A) Elon Musk asked me to write about this and B) I just wrote a post calling him the raddest possible man. Published continually since 1998, "NEWS YOU CAN USE" was a Blog before "Blog" was even a word! But two things to keep in mind: First, this isn’t commissioned by Musk, and I’m being paid $0. He suggested I take the issue on because I think he thinks there’s a lack of full tree trunks in people’s heads about it—but he never suggested that I say good things about Tesla, electric cars, or anything else. Second, the currency Wait But Why lives on is integrity. Without it, WBW loses its ability to make an impact. And integrity came first here, even at the expense of Musk potentially hating me at the end of it, if that’s what was necessary. If I didn’t think this would have made a great WBW topic, I wouldn’t have taken it on, and I’m pro- Tesla in the post because after a ton of learning and thinking—including as many counterarguments to Tesla and its worldview as I could find—that’s how I feel. And with that, let’s dive in. Contents. Part 1: The Story of Energy. Part 2: The Story of Cars. Part 3: The Story of Tesla___________Part 1: The Story of Energy. Energy is important. Without energy, we’d all be like this: But what really is energy? The dictionary says it’s “the property of matter and radiation that is manifest as a capacity to perform work.” And it says “work” is “the exertion of force overcoming resistance or producing molecular change.” Putting that together, we get energy being “the property of matter and radiation that is manifest as a capacity to perform the exertion of force overcoming resistance or producing molecular change.”That was pretty unfun, so for our purposes, let’s call energy “the thing that lets something do stuff.”But the tricky thing about energy is the law of conservation of energy, which says that energy can’t be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed from one form to another. And since every living thing needs energy in order to do stuff—and you can’t make your own energy—we’re all awkwardly left with no choice but to steal the energy we need from someone else. Almost all of the energy used by the Earth’s living things got to us in the first place from the sun. The sun’s energy is what makes the wind blow and the rain fall and it’s what powers the Earth’s living things—the biosphere. The joule is a common unit of energy—defined as the amount of energy it takes to apply a force of one newton through a distance of one meter. While the sun’s joules can provide any animal with heat and light, the joules that power all of us from the inside enter the biosphere in the first place when the sun gives them to plants. That’s how food is invented—plants know how to take the sun’s joules and turn them into food. At that point, all hell breaks loose as everyone starts murdering everyone else so they can steal their joules. We use “the food chain” as a cute euphemism for this murder/theft cycle, and we use the word “eating” to refer to “stealing someone else’s joules and also murdering them too.” A “predator” is a dick who always seems to want your joules over everyone else’s, and “prey” is just some sniveling nerd you particularly like to bully and steal lunch money from. Instagram, Facebook’s hotter, snootier subsidiary, may have a massive data breach on its hands. This week, a security flaw within Instagram allowed hackers to assemble a database of what appeared to be verified users’ contact information—some of those affected purportedly being celebrities and politicians. According to the Verge, Instagram now says the known scope of the breach has expanded to include at least some unverified Instagrammers.“.. We recently discovered a bug on Instagram that could be used to access some people’s email address and phone number even if they were not public,” Instagram CTO Mike Krieger wrote in a blog post. No passwords or other Instagram activity was revealed. We quickly fixed the bug, and have been working with law enforcement on the matter. Although we cannot determine which specific accounts may have been impacted, we believe it was a low percentage of Instagram accounts.”“We are very sorry this happened,” Krieger added. GameTrailers is your destination to see official trailers first. Powered by IGN, you can expect to see world-first exclusive gameplay and the hottest new tra.As the Daily Beast reported last week, the unknown hackers behind the breach claim to have compromised six million accounts and set up a website called “Doxagram,” which allegedly offered access to phone numbers, email addresses or both for 1,0. Instagram accounts at $1. While a few of the addresses were public information, “many did not return any relevant Google results, implying they were obtained from some private source.” The Beast was able to confirm some of the leaked accounts had valid contact information; the site was later taken offline. Per the Verge, cybersecurity firm Rep. Knight said supposed contact information for a number of celebrities featured on Doxagram was circulating on the dark web, ranging from Hollywood celebs like Emma Watson and Leonardo Di. Caprio to musician Harry Styles and boxer Floyd Mayweather. The Beast claimed the site even purported to have contact info behind President Donald Trump’s official Instagram profile, which was managed by White House social media director Dan Scavino. In addition to potentially exposing users to harassment, the breach could allow hackers to target them for social engineering attacks which could compromise their accounts. Instagram’s security hole may be linked to an incident on August 2. Selena Gomez—the most- followed user on the site—and posted nude photographs of Justin Bieber. Data breaches are not the only major problem reported at the social- media giant in recent days. On Friday, Mashable reported the site’s staff is rife with individuals willing to verify Instagram accounts for prices “anywhere from a bottle of wine to $1. |
